Resolved Question: How Would You Rate These Bassists?

19 November 2008, 8:13 pm

Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane/Starship) Brian Cole (original bass player for The Association) Geddy Lee (Rush) Sir Paul McCartney (as much as I dislike him) Carol Kaye (has played in the studio for everybody) Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads) John Entwhistle (The Who) Sting (Police) Noel Redding (Jimi Hendrix Experience...also plays 8-string bass) Any other obscure type? Rich: So where is your rating? Note the title of the thread...How Would You RATE These Basists?" Oops, I left out Peter Cetera. People who play tough bass lines have always fascinated me...like folks who can pat their heads and rub their tummies at the same time. It just seems counter-intuitive. I can either play bass, or sing lead...but not both. Plus, I am left-handed...I think it is my Lefty Rick 4001 that is holding me back...evil force inside. Frankly, I think she is weak...and she had one saving grace for staying in Talking Heads...her husband, Chris Frantz! LOL Surprised you dissed Casady...I mean, he was good enough for James Brown. And, I think Brian Cole was an excellent player, when he wasn't high, which was never. TIM: I use flat wound Fender strings now...no real problem. Worst thing is I had to have surgery done on my right thumb (ligament) and they had to cut the sheath around the nerve, so I lost a lot of hand strength. It is bad enough that I can't play guitar anymore, because I can't get my right index finger into a bar without a whole lot of contortions on the guitar itself. On the bass, I am having to pick individual note, rather than form chord structures. It works out well for improving hand speed, but it is VERY hard for me to do.... Read More »
